Shiatsu: Japanese Acupressure for Balance and Energy
Shiatsu is a traditional Japanese massage technique using finger pressure on specific points (similar to acupuncture but without needles). Shiatsu therapists may use not just their fingers, but also palms, elbows, or even knees to apply rhythmic pressure along the body’s energy pathways or meridians. The goal here is to balance energy (known as “Qi”) and promote overall wellness.
What I love about Shiatsu is how it combines pressure with gentle stretches. It’s done over clothes, making it good for people who don’t want to disrobe, and it leaves me feeling refreshed and clearheaded. Shiatsu also tends to help people battling ongoing stress, insomnia, or headaches by helping the body relax naturally without oil or lotion. Some Japanese spas will also offer acupressure as a quick, chair-based session for people short on time.
