Ayurvedic Massage: Ancient Wisdom from India
Ayurvedic massage is rooted in traditional Indian wellness practices and relies heavily on warm herbal oils chosen to suit your body type (called doshas). A therapist will use sweeping strokes, kneading, tapping, and sometimes deeply relaxing head massages like the popular “Abhyanga.” The oil isn’t just for relaxation. It’s supposed to help balance mind and body based on Ayurvedic principles.
I tried Ayurvedic massage during a retreat, and the herbal scents and warmth of the oils left a long-lasting sense of calm that’s a bit different from more conventional massages. The experience often includes calming music or chanting, making it a unique, multisensory escape from stress.
